Topics included:

Practical strategies for working with individuals actively using substances,

Interventions aimed at minimizing the risk of housing loss,

Understanding relapse as part of the process rather than a “failure.”

The teams deepened their knowledge of responding to crises without escalation and of collaboratively planning safety strategies with beneficiaries. The supervisor emphasized the importance of strengthening beneficiaries’ agency and decision-making capacity. She supported the transition from a caregiving/expert model to a partnership model, encouraging the transfer of decision-making power to beneficiaries (even when decisions involve risk), and reinforcing personal resources and even the smallest successes.

Supervision also included discussions on working with individuals with dual diagnoses (substance use and mental health disorders) and on procedures that help ensure the safety of both staff and beneficiaries.

Supervision provided a continuous space for:

Discussing complex cases and ethical dilemmas,

Regulating emotional tension and preventing burnout, while maintaining and respecting both personal and professional boundaries,

Strengthening teamwork and collaboration,

Clarifying priorities and developing strategies in crisis situations.

Final conclusions

In the first team, increased cohesion around a relationship-based approach was observed, along with greater reflectiveness in working with beneficiaries and heightened awareness of emotional self-regulation and work hygiene.

In the second external team, the supervisor observed increased confidence of the support worker in crisis situations, more frequent transfer of decision-making to beneficiaries, greater reinforcement of their agency, and deeper competence in harm reduction practice.

The more than year-long supervision process demonstrated a significant need for ongoing support for staff working with people experiencing homelessness across multiple dimensions of practice. Through this form of support, teams can develop professional maturity, increase tolerance for uncertainty regarding “outcomes,” sustain hope in long-term work, and strengthen their understanding of both their own resources and those of the beneficiaries.

Supervision covered two external teams: During the supervision process, particular emphasis was placed on strengthening the following competencies: Throughout the supervision process, competencies supporting the development of trust-based and partnership-oriented relationships were enhanced, along with skills in working at a pace defined by the person receiving support.
