Registered homeless people in Bulgaria are 1,872

There are shelters for just over 880…

According to the Social Assistance Agency data, as of January 31, 2025, there are 1,872 officially registered homeless people in Bulgaria, Nova TV reported. In the last 9 months 1,260 people have been registered – it is over 300 more than in the previous year. 2/3 of them are people with higher education, including nurses, accountants, translators…

However, it is possible that there are many more homeless people outside the lists. There are no official statistics on the number of homeless people in the country.

There are 7 shelters in Bulgaria, which according to data as of the end of January 2025 are 90% full, and 16 Temporary Accommodation Centers.

In Sofia there are 3 Temporary Accommodation Centers, which have about 570 places, but during the winter months they accept over 600 people. As of February 20, 2025, the accommodation capacity in the capital is full, and among them there are about 150 children.

Temporary Accommodation Centers in Sofia
Year-round capacity: 570
Capacity in winter: 600+

So far, there is shelter in Bulgaria for just over 880 people – it is the total number of places in the 7 shelters and the 16 Temporary Accommodation Centers in the country.

In a report for the program “Temata na Nova”, the director of the Temporary Accommodation Center “Saint Sophia” Galya Georgieva says that most of the homeless there are people who were deceived by the housing mafia or elderly people who were evicted by their own children.

Over the past 10 years, the number of homeless people in EU countries has increased by 70%. That is why the European Union has set itself the ambitious goal of not having a single person living under the open sky by 2030. That’s why the SOLACE-CEE project is needed and we are part of it! So that there are no more fates with no roof!
